AAA Skater Mentor Program 2008

The plan is to provide an opportunity for an athlete with a disability who would not normally skate, to train with the Melbourne Speed Club as cross-training for their chosen sport and paralympic goals, through association with government, industry bodies and sporting organisations and through participation in an event similar to “International Day for People with a Disability”.

OUTLINE
Key objectives of the AAA Skater Mentor Program include:
• Promoting awareness of the benefits of active participation,
• Providing support for inclusive sport and recreation environments,
• Influencing the planning and development of accessible and inclusive sport and recreation environments.
• Fostering and developing partnerships to enhance access and inclusion in the sport and recreation sector.
• Create a safe and healthy opportunity for someone who would not otherwise skate to train with the Melbourne Speed Club.
• Include in the Club Development Plan the AAA Skater Mentor Program.
• Add a date to the MSC Annual Plan for a AAA Program meeting for all members.
• Add a date to the MSC Annual Plan for the “International Day for People with a Disability”.
• Build relationships with business and organisations that support AAA initiatives.
• Select 1 skater to participate in the program annually.
• Nominate a mentor to assist the skater or mentors depending on individual needs.
• Prepare guidelines for participant, mentor and members’ expectations.
• Fund equipment, membership fees, training dues, competition fees and other individual needs such as translator or transport, to assist the skater over 2 years.
• Seek funding through grant applications to fund program costs.
• Prepare a personalised Annual Training Plan inline with the MSC Annual Training Plan.
• Include in the New Member Information Pack the AAA Skater Mentor Program.
• Support athletes with paralympic goals through the cross training benefits of inline speed skating.
