MSC coaches have been instrumental in the growth and direction of members' training programs. Together with Skate Victoria (SV) and the VIS they have developed a comprehensive training program that will assist each squad to plan, monitor and achieve their very best performance levels. The success of the MSC Training Program is found in the planning detail and in the fact that it is fun at all levels.

Speed Skating is a competitive sport, which has been around since the early 1940s. Competitive Speed skating encompasses three primary forms or racing being track racing, road racing and marathon.

Track racing takes place on an oval track measured on a flat even skating surface. Cones mark the ends of the track, called corners. The distance raced will vary according to age group and ability. Skating takes place in an anti-clockwise direction.

Road races are conducted on different types of surfaces. The minimum distance for a road circuit is 250m that must have a minimum width of 5m. The average road circuit is between 400m and 500m however in the longer distance events such as the marathon these can be conducted on an open road. The distance of road racing varies according to age and race category.

Marathons are generally conducted on a road surface. The SV Marathon distance is 42km.
